About Captain Trevor Cabell and Island sails kauai

Growing up on Oahu and Kauai, Captain Trevor Cabell was
drawn to the ocean from an early age, influenced by his father. Diving, surfing, and sailing became his passions. However, it wasn’t until his mentor introduced him to a Hawaiian sailing canoe that he fell in love with every aspect of this way of life.

In 1996, he designed and built Kupaaloa, a traditional Hawaiian sailing canoe and started Island Sails Kauai. The beautifully crafted canoe is his pride and joy that he meticulously cares for. Safety and craftsmanship are his priorities.

After more than a decade of sharing Kupaaloa with visitors from all over the world, a new vision emerged. In 2014, Captain Trevor began designing and building a trimaran that he would later sail on a 7-day solo trip to Fanning Island in 2017. The years of preparation resulted in a meaningful journey that was a dream come true. Not only did the vessel succeed the voyage but it was intact, with no injury, a testament to his knowledge, skill, and connection to the water.

Today, Captain Trevor and Kupaaloa continue to treat new friends to its magic but with a renewed sense of sharing as he’s been able to include his daughter on these special voyages.
